Bio-Safety Cabinet

A bio-safety cabinet (BSC) is a ventilated laboratory workspace designed to protect personnel, the environment, and research materials from exposure to bio-hazards.

Function and Purpose

BSCs primarily function as bio-containment systems, preventing the release of hazardous aerosols generated during laboratory procedures. They are crucial for research involving pathogens, handling clinical samples, and sterile compounding in pharmacies. The cabinets utilize high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters to purify air and maintain negative pressure with inward airflow to create a containment barrier.

Classes of Bio-safety Cabinets

The CDC categorizes BSCs into three classes based on their protection levels and suitability for different bio-safety levels (BSL):

Class I: Protects personnel and the environment but not the product. Air is drawn in and HEPA-filtered before exhaust. Suitable for BSL-1, BSL-2, and BSL-3 agents.

Class II: Protects personnel, the environment, and the product. It uses inward airflow for personnel protection and downward HEPA-filtered laminar airflow for product protection, with HEPA-filtered exhaust. Different types (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1) vary in air handling and exhaust systems; Type A2 is common, while Type B is used for significant chemical/radionuclide work.

Class III: Offers the highest level of protection in a gas-tight enclosure (glove box). Operations are conducted through attached gloves. Air is double-HEPA filtered or filtered and incinerated, making it suitable for BSL-4 agents like Ebola.
